The Different Roles of Enstratius and OpenStack at Dell

Due to Dell’s recent Enstratius acquisition, their commitment to the OpenStack platform has come under heavy scrutiny. Since Enstratius is an enterprise cloud management solution for both private and public clouds, some believe that Dell is planning to make Enstratius the focal point of their cloud strategy – leaving OpenStack to be forgotten.

However, according to recent announcements from Dell, that is simply not the case. There are two very different roles that OpenStack and Enstratius will play to support Dell’s overall cloud strategy, and both are crucial to its success.

On one hand, OpenStack will remain Dell’s primary Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud computing solution for the open-source community. To reinforce their commitment to OpenStack, Dell has recently announced their efforts to enable Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V on the OpenStack platform.

Enstratius, on the other hand, will be utilized as Dell’s primary public and private multi-cloud management solution. The Enstratius management solution offers the advantage of providing support for more than 20 different cloud vendors.

As a result, it’s clear that Dell is making efforts to support their commitments to both OpenStack and Enstratius. And while many have seen these two cloud solutions as competitors, they are really partners within Dell’s cloud strategy, combining forces to provide their customers with the best possible cloud strategy.
